A Week of Dinner Ideas Using Sourdough Starter

I often get asked whether we eat sourdough for every meal ... and the answer is pretty much yes! So I thought I'd share a typical week of dinners in our home and show you how I use my homemade sourdough starter in pretty much every dinner we eat! A list of sourdough dinner ideas if you will.
My sourdough starter lives on my kitchen counter and is fed every single day so there's always lots of sourdough starter to make something delicious with (you can see how I keep my starter on the counter here)!
I'm also a big meal planner, so more often than not, I'll make a lot of our meals on a Sunday and freeze them for the week ahead (otherwise we might be surviving on sourdough bread alone ... which might not be a bad thing, right ... especially if you top it with these sourdough scrambled eggs).
If I'm testing a recipe that week, I'll more often than not use all the testing for our meals or snacks too so that the food doesn't go to waste. Have I told you how my family love eating my sourdough experiments?

A Week of Sourdough Dinner Ideas
So let me share with you a typical week of sourdough dinner ideas that we eat on a regular basis. All of them use my homemade sourdough starter and simple ingredients to create tasty dinner ideas the whole family eats (and trust me getting the whole family to eat the same meal is often a difficult task in my house).

MONDAY - Sourdough Pasta
Depending on what everyone wants, we generally will have a nice, easy spaghetti bolognese or pesto made with homemade sourdough pasta. I will make the sauce during the meal prep on Sunday and often the pasta too. I like to make large batches of sourdough pasta and dry it out before freezing it for easy dinners. We also love eating sourdough pasta served with these sourdough meatballs!
Another good Monday night dinner is this delicious sourdough chicken pot pie, which can also be prepared in advance.
TUESDAY - Soup with Sourdough Dumplings
We LOVE soup! Especially soup that we can add sourdough dumplings to. It's still ok to have bread on the side too, right haha. Well if it isn't, don't tell my children (in our house these sourdough pampushky are non-negotiable with soup)!
My favorite soup to make is good old chicken and vegetable soup. It's quick, easy and I can pack in a tonne of veggies! And these sourdough dumplings are so easy to pull together mid week. Sometimes, a batch of sourdough butter swim biscuits are called for ... these are a super easy way to add bulk to soups and stews!
WEDNESDAY - Pulled Pork Cibatta Rolls
I usually do quite a bit of meal prep on the weekends and I almost always make some pulled pork in the Instant Pot for a quick easy mid week meal. We raise our own pigs so there's always plenty of pork in the freezer. These sourdough cibatta rolls freeze really well too, so it's easy to make a big batch and have some on hand for a mid week meal. We love changing it up with sourdough tortillas some weeks too.
THURSDAY - Sourdough Mac & Cheese
Sourdough mac and cheese is another meal that I will generally make on a Sunday and freeze so there's less stress during the week. But it's also quick enough to make from scratch too if we don't have one in the freezer. Pair it with a fresh salad (full of sourdough croutons) or some steamed broccoli and it's a complete meal! This sourdough hash brown casserole is also a great one to have in the freezer and makes a great side dish for pretty much anything.
FRIDAY - Burgers with Sourdough Discard Burger Buns
We eat burgers every Friday night - we just vary the meat in the middle! Some weeks it's cheese burgers, other weeks crispy chicken. Sometimes I'll even make these sourdough sweet potato and chickpea fritters for a meat free burger. But no matter what we have in them, we always make these sourdough discard hamburger buns for our Friday night burgers!
Friday night is one of the nights we have a dessert too so I will often make something like sourdough banana fritters or even some sourdough baked donuts to have after our main meal.
SATURDAY - Sourdough Pizza
Saturday nights is sourdough pizza night! We now have a woodfired pizza oven, so we find Saturday is easier to make pizza now (it used to be Friday nights). We always use this foolproof sourdough pizza dough - honestly I have lost count how many pizza I've made with it!
The woodfired pizza oven takes at least half the day to get hot enough to make pizza so Saturdays everyone gets involved in chopping the wood, preparing the dough and toppings. It's so much fun and we all look forward to it.
For dessert the kids will often make a dessert pizza using leftover sourdough pizza dough or even s'mores as the pizza oven cools down.
I love having something more traditional like a big ol slice of sourdough apple pie with lashings of vanilla icecream or even some of this simple sourdough strawberry cake with a cup of tea!
SUNDAY - Roast Dinner with Sourdough Gravy and Sourdough Popovers
Sunday is usually a roast dinner in our house. It's the day that I do all of our meal prep for the week, so putting a roast on is easy as I'm already in the kitchen. To go with out roast, I make sourdough gravy using sourdough discard to thicken it up (instead of just adding flour). I also make a batch of sourdough popovers (or Yorkshire puddings) to go with out roast and gravy. They are just the best thing to mop up all the leftover gravy!
In warmer weather we might also have a nice salad accompanied by some sourdough cheese waffles, sourdough zucchini muffins or even a quiche made with a sourdough crust (using this sourdough pie crust recipe). Oh and these sourdough discard scallion pancakes also might a lovely light supper.
I also love making batter from sourdough discard and putting together a platter of tempura chicken and veggies.
